Statistical Analyst - status: Open

The Program in India on Transition, located at the Maryland Population Research Center (MPRC) at the University of Maryland in College Park, seeks a Statistical Analyst to join its research team. This new program consists of two sets of activities: the first involves ongoing data collection in and around New Delhi as part of Delhi Metropolitan Area Study and the second involves India Human Development Survey, a panel study initiated in 2004.

The Statistical Analyst will provide statistical and computational programming services to research projects housed within this program and help curate data for public release. The analyst will also help develop platform for visual communication of data and maintain the user queries regarding India Human Development Survey that have been placed in the public domain. The analyst will also help design data collection and statistical analysis strategy for the third wave of the India Human Development Survey.

Gender Research Associate - status: Open

Postdoctoral Faculty Research Associate

Maryland Population Research Center, University of Maryland, has received a three-year grant from the Hewlett Foundation to develop survey-based measurement of women’s economic empowerment. Enhancing women’s economic empowerment is a core goal of Sustainable Development Goals requiring development of appropriate measurement tools to track progress. This project will develop measures of women’s economic empowerment that can be easily incorporated in national surveys and test their reliability and validity. These modules will be placed in public domain for use by the scientific community. The project will: (1) Curate existing statistical data on women’s economic empowerment across different countries and its close correlates in the area of educational, social and political empowerment; (2) Develop and pretest scalable survey modules and place these modules in the public domain for possible adoption by statistical agencies and researchers; and, (3) Facilitate creation of a community of researchers, program implementers and data collectors working on women’s economic empowerment using web-based platforms around methodological issues involved in measuring empowerment.

This project will have one opening for a Faculty Research Associate who will collaborate with the principal investigators, Sonalde Desai and Feinian Chen, in all aspects of the project. This will involve: (1) Review and analysis of existing survey data on women’s economic, social and political empowerment; (2) Design of new survey instruments and pretesting; (3) Execution of communications strategy around new research and findings via web based platforms including social media.
