Brian Wiersema
is a senior research specialist in the Department of
Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of
Maryland and a member of the Violence Research Group. His
interests include various aspects of violence and social
control (e.g., effects of firearms laws), measurement and
data quality, and computing methods. Much of his work has
involved understanding, manipulating, and analyzing
large-scale data sets such as the National Crime
Victimization Survey (NCVS), the Uniform Crime Reports, and
the National Vital Statistics System's Mortality Detail
Files. He has collaborated in research that has appeared in
leading journals of criminology, public health, and
medicine. At present, he directs the Maryland Firearm Injury
Statistics System and conducts research on the NCVS for the
National Consortium on Violence Research.
