In 1975, he joined the UMD Computer Science Department where he remains a professor. He is also a member of the Computer Vision Laboratory of the Center for Automation Research where he leads numerous research projects on the use of hierarchical spatial data structures including:
  • Quadtrees and octrees,
  • the SAND system (which integrates spatial and non-spatial data),
  • the SAND Spatial Browser (which uses a graphical user interface to browse a spatial database),
  • the VASCO spatial indexing applet, and
  • a symbolic image database system.
Samet's research interests include data structures, computer graphics, geographic information systems (GIS), computer vision, robotics, programming languages, artificial intelligence and database management systems.
