The Seed Grant Program at Maryland has four goals for the development of
faculty research: (1) to facilitate the development of strong individual
research proposals, especially NIH and NSF applications, (2) to support junior
faculty in proposal development, (3) to encourage faculty in allied fields or
faculty who have not previously sought funding from NIH to develop grant
proposals, and (4) to encourage grant development that involves faculty from
more than one discipline.
The Seed Grant Program is also a crucial mechanism by which we entice scholars
working on population-related topics to affiliate and become active in the
Center. Our approach to "seeding" promising, high quality research has been
two-pronged. Initial funding from the University allowed us to begin with a
limited, highly targeted approach (described below). The arrival of
developmental R-24 infrastructure funds in the summer of 2001 allowed us to
launch a competitive Seed Grant Program in the fall of 2001. We hope to
continue this competition in future years using mixed funding to continue the
program.
