SOCY699E Special Social Problems: Migration, Immigration, and Ethnicity; (3 credits) Grade Method: REG/AUD.

Immigration has been a prominent feature of the U.S. since its inception. Most Americans can trace their ancestry to other countries in the world. This seminar examines the theories of immigration (why do people move? who moves?), immigrant adaptation or assimilation, and the impacts of immigration (economic, social, cultural, political). We also explore the different aspects of immigrant lives: What will happen to the second generation (intergenerational mobility, persistent inequality, and negotiating U.S. race relations)? What is the relationship between gender and/or family dynamics and migration? And how do transnationalism and globalization impact traditional views of immigrant assimilation and integration? Most of the course readings focus on the U.S. context, though other parts of the world are also discussed.
