American Time Use Survey Data Extract Builder (ATUS-X) and Conferences

The American Time Use Survey Data Extract Builder has been up and running for a number of years, and the research team has sponsored conferences in 2007, 2009, and 2011

Background

Through an NIH Research Project Grant Program, Faculty Associate Katherine Abraham led a team of investigators, including researchers from the Minnesota Population Center, to develop Version 1.0 of the American Time Use Survey Data Extract Builder (ATUS-X). The Builder was released on June 30, 2008, and has since been updated to Version 2.0. It is available at www.atusdata.org.

ATUS-X is dedicated to making it easy for researchers to use data from the American Time Use Survey (ATUS). ATUS files are generally challenging for researchers. But ATUS-X files are ready for analysis and should encourage increased use of the ATUS data so researchers can better address a range of important social and policy topics. The ATUS-X strives to collect and preserve ATUS data and documentation, to harmonize the data from different years, and to make it easy to create data files containing unique ATUS variables.

Abraham and the ATUS-X team released Version 2.0 in 2009. Using ATUS-X Version 2.0, users can select study populations, personal and household variables, and measures of time. Users also have flexibility with definitions of time use variables, and can access data for survey years 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. The new version includes data from the 2007 ATUS, an Eating and Health module, as well as documentation and operational improvements based on user feedback.

Conferences

Dr. Abraham is now on leave to work on the White House Council of Economic Advisors, Dr. Hofferth, MPRC Director, is currently leading the project, along with Dr. Sarah Flood of the Minnesota Population Center, The research team has sponsored conferences in 2007, 2009, and 2011, each of which has produced significant participation in the form of papers, posters, and animated discussion. In addition, several ATUS-X workshops have been held to help train new scholars in the use of the ATUS data.
