Abstract
The broad objective of the proposed study is to increase our understanding of the transitions experienced by fathers on the margins of family and work. We utilize two datasets with low-income fathers who no longer have close ties with their child's mother and who have experienced multiple life transitions. The specific aims are (1) to document critical life transitions in low-income fathers' lives over time; (2) to identify how risk and resilience factors shape men's involvement during early childhood; and (3) to examine the processes that mediate conditions of risk and resilience for the continued involvement of transitory fathers. We use a mixed methods research design, with the Fragile Families dataset (n=656) and the Life History Studies data set (n=150). The methods to be used are regression analyses, and modified grounded theory with semi-structured interviews. This research will suggest how promotion of paternal resilience in policies and programs may enhance family stability and ultimately individual well-being for fathers, children, and mothers as well.

Abstract
How do intergenerational relationships shape and support pathways to successful adult outcomes for disadvantaged young men? This study has three distinct phases. During the first phase, the investigator will examine data from the NLSY79 Young Adult Study, a nationally representative sample of over 1700 young adult men. Phase two will match and pool a low-income sub-sample of young men from the NLSY79 with a sample of 135 low-income men from four of the investigators previous studies. These two phases of the study will try to identify factors that affect the timing of transitions and to examine the differences in adulthood outcomes. In phase three, the investigator will interview 80 low-income young men to reveal how they give meaning to father/son relationships, and how these relationships may structure expectations for the young men’s own parenting, employment, and union formation.
