Haltiwanger Article on vacancies and hiring cited in the New York Times

Employers hesitant to hire, reports NYT's Catherine Rampell

In a March 6 article in the New York Times, Catherine Rampell reported that "American employers have a variety of vacancies, piles of cash, and countless well-qualified candidates," but remain hesitant about hiring them. She draws upon research done by MPRC Faculty Associate John Haltiwanger, along with Steven J. Davis and R. Jason Faberman and published in the Quarterly Journal of Economics. The paper offers "a new index of recruiting intensity (per vacancy)" and is intended to be helpful in the development and calibration of "theoretical models of search, matching and hiring in the labor market."

The authors find that vacancies are taking an average of 23 days to fill, compared with a low of 15 days in 2009.
