Desai article links caste to social outcomes in India

Cited in WSJ IndiaRealTime blog

Sonalde Desai's paper, written with Amaresh Dubey for Economic and Political Weekly, finds that education alone does not account for disparities in income for members of India's lower castes. Writing in the Wall Street Journal's IndiaRealTime blog, Rupa Subramanya Dehejia notes that 20 years of economic reform have resulted in an economic growth rate of 8 percent in the world's most populous democracy, but along with the growth have come increasing "inequities in wealth and income."

She cites Desai's joint study, which "found that caste matters.... in particular that lower castes have less land, lower educational status, poorer nutrition and health care, and fewer social connections to get help when needed.
