Abstract

Using the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing data set, this study investigates the mechanisms underlying the association between union instability and children’s externalizing problem behaviors. Children’s externalizing behaviors are the most common and persistent form of social maladaptation in childhood. This study has the following aims:(1) to examine how union instability during early childhood is related to the change in children’s externalizing behaviors between ages 3 and 9; (2); to examine if co-parenting support and father involvement mediates the association between union instability and children’s behaviors at age 9; and, (3) to test the moderating influences of mother and father depression, maternal relationship quality with her current partner, and child temperament on the association between union instability and children’s behavioral outcomes at age 9.
