The Immigration Working Group met on Thursday, Sept. 17, right as President Obama was addressing a packed house at the Comcast Center.  Although our attendance was small (Judith Freidenberg, Joan Kahn, Julie Park, Karen Woodrow-Lafield, Gail Thakur, Amy Carattini, and Tina Zarpour), the conversation was lively and the meeting was productive.

We first introduced ourselves and our areas of interest.  Then, we opened up the discussion regarding our expectations for the working group.  There was consensus that we should discuss our own work but also listen to what relevant researchers on immigration had to say.

FALL SEMESTER

This month, SOCY and MPRC will host 3 talks which should be of interest to the Immigration Working Group.  Please mark them on your calendars:

Oct. 8  Lingxin Hao (Johns Hopkins University) will speak (at 12:15 in rm. 1101 Art/Soc) on “From Temporary to Permanent: Extended Internal Labor Markets and Skilled Immigration to the U.S.”

Oct. 15  Kyle Crowder (UNC-Chapel Hill) will speak (at 12:15 in rm. 1101 Art/Soc) on “Immigration & Native Mobility
Decisions: The Influence of Local & Extralocal Conditions”

Oct. 22  Jennifer Glick (Arizona State University) will speak (at 12:15 in rm. 1101 Art/Soc) on "Family Migration Patterns: Maternal Age at Arrival & Children’s Cognitive & Academic Performance"

Please note that the talk on Oct. 22 falls at the same time as our second scheduled Immigration Working Group meeting for the semester.  At our first meeting, the group decided to attend the talk and then meet together afterwards.
For our final meeting of the semester on Nov. 11, we intend to invite an outside speaker and will let you know when it has been arranged.  Please hold the date on your calendar!

SPRING SEMESTER:

There was consensus in the group that we wanted to learn about who was conducting immigration research, where, and with which data sets.  There was interest discussed in hearing from researchers at Brookings, the Census Bureau, and the Congressional Research Service, and also to hear about datasets such as the New Immigrant Survey and the American Community Survey.   We ended up suggesting the following Panel Presentations for the Spring Semester:

1.  Congressional Research Service
2.  New Immigrant Survey
3.  Census Bureau, especially their partnering with smaller organizations for Census 2010
4.  Consortium Universities with substantial immigration research

POSSIBLE PRODUCTS FOR THE WORKING GROUP 2009-2010:

1.  A list of resources on immigration research, including websites and data sets and possibly a review of their strengths and limitations.  This product would be presented at the end of the year and made available to researchers

2.  A lecture series on immigration at the university (announced in FYI and open to the public)

If you are interested in contributing items to the resource list or suggesting names of possible guest speakers, please contact Judith Freidenberg (jfreiden@anth.umd.edu) or Joan Kahn (jkahn@socy.umd.edu)

We look forward to hearing from you!!

Judith and Joan
